Our Practice is client-centered, wellness oriented, and holistic. We want to provide a level of service to you and your pet that is equal, if not superior to that of human hospitals, and we use the safest and most humane methods known to veterinary medicine. We believe that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure- literally. Well Care in the form of appropriate dental prophylaxis, senior semi-annual exams, and weight management can improve the quality of your pet’s life and prevent expensive heroic treatment for arthritis, diabetes and pre-mature organ failure. Sometimes our clients wonder why our charges for surgery and dentistry are higher than some of the other veterinary hospitals in the area. The answer is simple – quality and safety. And quality and safety come from training, adequate staffing, the best equipment, safe and caring protocols, and a holistic approach.
Training
In today’s small animal veterinary practice, Veterinary Technicians routinely take your pet’s x-rays, draw blood, insert catheters, do lab work, make up prescriptions, dress wounds, induce and monitor anesthesia, assist in surgery, and perform dental prophylaxis. All of our Technicians are highly trained and are at least certified in their field. In some cases, they may actually be veterinarians from another country. And our Technicians receive monthly, formal, in-service training by our Veterinarians. Many, if not most animal hospitals, except for the Referral Clinics, have technicians who are not certified and are frequently minimally trained.
Equipment
To do the best job for your pet, we have invested in top-of-the-line equipment, including human grade vital signs monitoring devices, digital x-ray, blood chemistry machines, gas anesthesia machines, and advanced dental prophylaxis apparatus. Bad teeth and jaw bone loss are often difficult to diagnose in pets, and we are one of very few practices in the area that offer dental x-rays. Our computer enhanced digital dental x-ray equipment is more advanced than that of most human dentists. Unlike many hospitals, our routine dentals include sub-gingival dental prophylaxis and ultrasonic scaling performed under anesthesia, instead of hand scaling with a simple sedative. In this way we are able to remove the plaque that accumulates below the gum line which is the eventual cause peritonitis and tooth/bone loss. We also polish the teeth and apply a sealer, so that the patient does not emerge from a dentistry with rough surfaces on their teeth that easily and immediately accumulate plaque. We also have the ability to insert slow-release antibiotic below the gum line in cases of severe gum/bone infections, just as is done in human periodontal work.
Safety and Comfort
Our surgical theater resembles that seen in a human hospital with capped and gowned practitioners, sterile procedure, highly trained technicians, and heated surgical tables to maintain body temperature. To decrease anesthetic risk, all surgical and dental patients receive pre-anesthetic blood work to determine if they have any underlying problem that might compromise their safety under anesthetic. We can also perform pre-anesthetic EKGs and x-rays if we are uncertain about the condition of the patient’s heart. Unlike many if not most hospitals, during the time our patients are anesthetized for either surgery or dentistry, we continually monitor your pets ECG, pulse oximetry, blood pressure, temperature, capnography, and FiO2. Every anesthetic patient is catheterized and receives warmed intravenous fluid therapy to support blood pressure. In addition, this allows intravenous medication to be given at a moment’s notice should the patient become distressed. In all major surgical and all dental procedures, patients are intubated and, just like human patients, receive gas anesthesia, which is much more safely regulated than the less expensive injectable anesthetics more commonly used in animals. And, all surgical and most dental patients receive pain medication.
A Holistic Approach and Complimentary Medicine
We operate from a holistic perspective, which means we do not see just an ear, a bump, or a leg when we look at your pet, but the entire individual. We believe that the fewer vaccines we can safely give, and the less medicine we can prescribe for a given situation the healthier your pet will be. So, to this end, in addition to traditional medicine and surgery we offer the complimentary sciences of acupuncture, homeopathy, nutritional counseling/therapy, and herbal medicine.
As our clientele has grown over the years we have expanded our facility and staff to meet our client's needs. We now have three full time and one part-time veterinarian. We specialize in the well-care, treatment, boarding, and grooming of dogs, cats, and pocket pets.
We are proud of our safety record and the health, comfort, and happiness of our patients.
